The Warded Gunslinger Easter Eggs

I often put in Easter Eggs in my stories, whether books or short stories. Most of them are nods to people, characters, novels and tropes that I like. Here’s the list for The Warded Gunslinger. If you haven’t read it yet, be aware that there are spoilers.

The List

  • CH1: Rifle and Foil – The Three Musketeers. Also, I’ve reused the foil in another work. Maybe I’ll tell you about it some time.
  • CH1: Once Upon a Time – The way all stories start. Also, a classic spaghetti western starring Henry Fonda.
  • CH1: Phlebotinum – in SFF jargon phlebotinum is a material with wondrous (or dangerous) properties whose only function is to be a plot McGuffin. Originally, I used “atium”, a magical metal that allows you to see a few seconds into the future in Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series, but it felt a bit too jarring if you’d read it. If you haven’t read it, and you have any tolerance at all for fantasy, do yourself a favor and read it now. It’s amazing, and the Wax and Wayne sequels are even better.
  • CH1: Tomlin – In honor of actress Lily Tomlin, particularity for her work in 9 to 5. Yes, I’m old.
  • CH1: Weather gets bad – Star Wars. All we need now are tauntauns.
  • CH1: Ominous silence – A tribute to Schlock Mercenary’s “Ominous Hummmmmmmm”. Look it up if you don’t know what I mean.
  • CH1: Ratburger – From the movie Demolition Man. Which had some very nice moments, no matter what the critics may say.
  • CH1: black-and-slim / Maurice – A classical western villain look: black dining jacket over white shirt, and a very narrow tie. You’ll find it in any number of movies. And he’s even got the evil mustache.
  • CH2: Vi-Luong – A friendly nod to an old friend. You know who you are.
  • CH8: Gratuitous bathing scene – In honor of Terrence Hill, aka Mario Girotti, who always had a gratuitous bathing scene featuring himself wearing a woolen body-sock in all his westerns. And if you don’t know who Hill is, go watch “My Name is Nobody”. Or any of the Terrence Hill / Bud Spencer movies.
  • CH10: If you think a tall, strong, mechanically apt sidekick reminds you of a certain wookie, you might be right.
  • CH13: Light tuned an annoying brothel red – The whole location is taken from Bladerunner (the original one). I’ll let you figure out which one it is.
  • CH14: Bright, blue hued lights disappearing – An obscure reference to Jack Vance’s Planet of Adventure series, this one to The Pnume. I’ve read that series at least fifteen times, if not more.
  • CH23: It featured a spaceship, with blazing guns and a dragon curling around it. – Spaceships, blazing guns, and dragons. Sounds like any series you just read? Not saying which one it is, though – meta-references for the win! 😀
